Mike Schmidt had a 3-RBI night to help the Philadelphia Phillies down the Chicago Cubs, 7-4. Pete Alexander, the winning pitcher, improved to 9-2. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 6 and walking 2. The Phillies now own a record of 40-20.

The game turned with no one out in the top of the fourth. That's when Schmidt hit a solo home run off Rick Sutcliffe. It propelled the Phillies into the lead, 4-3.

"We were able to put some good swings on some pitches," Schmidt told the Philadelphia Chronicle.
