Cardinals Peel Off 4-3 Win
The New York Mets got a sterling performance from pitcher Hilton Smith, but the St. Louis Cardinals still prevailed, 4-3. Smith threw 7.2 innings allowing 4 runs. The winner was Todd Worrell in relief. His record improves to 3-1. Hilton Smith took the loss. The Cardinals saw their record improve to 30-30.

The Cardinals beat the Mets in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Ken Boyer produced in the bottom of the seventh. Batting against Hilton Smith, Boyer gave his team the lead, 4-3, when he hit a run-scoring single.

"Enjoyed this one," Boyer told the St. Louis News. "But it's back to work tomorrow."
