The New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves, 5-3, in 10 innings in National League action at Turner Field. New York pitcher Bill Drake had a standout performance. Tom Seaver, now 4-2, picked up the win in relief. He allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 1.1 innings. With the win, the Mets improved to 29-23.
New York won the game in part because of Keith Hernandez. The first baseman ripped a 2-run home run in the top of the tenth inning to put the Mets ahead, 5-3. For the game, Hernandez had 1 double and 1 home run in 5 at-bats.
"This game showed the grit and grind of our guys," said Hernandez.
