Nationals Drop 6-4 Decision to Cardinals
|
St. Louis starter Bob Gibson pitched effectively against the Washington Nationals at Busch Stadium. The right-hander led his team to a win, 6-4. Gibson, the winner, moves to 5-1. He threw 7.1 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 7 and giving up 1 walk. Bruce Sutter got the save, the 16th for him this season.
The Cardinals benefited from a costly error in the bottom of the sixth. With Rogers Hornsby at bat and St. Louis leading 4-1, the Washington miscue allowed St. Louis to plate 2 and take the lead, 6-1.
"We had some nice at-bats at the right time," said Cardinals manager .
St. Louis, now 26-23, holds down first place in the National League Central Division.
