Padres Get 3-0 Win Versus Washington
|
The home crowd had a good time watching the Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres get after it.
The San Diego Padres topped the Washington Nationals, 3-0, in National League action at Petco Park. The game was highlighted by the performance of San Diego pitcher Bruce Hurst. The winner was Hurst. He threw 5.1 innings of shutout ball. The loser was Dennis Martinez. Trevor Hoffman, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 9th save.
Manny Machado had a big solo home run for the Padres in the bottom of the fourth inning. With San Diego leading 1-0 and the bases empty, he sized up a curveball from 36-year old right-handed pitcher Dennis Martinez and punished it. The result was his 9th home run of the season, which put the Padres on top, 2-0.
"We take it day by day here," said Hurst, "and today was a good one for us."
The win moves San Diego to a record of 17-14.
