Vaughan Earns Praise as Pirates Topple Phillies, 8-7
|
The Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-7, with youngster Arky Vaughan playing a key role. Vaughan went 3-3 with a home run, a triple, a walk, and was hit by a pitch, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once for the Pirates in the win. Jesse Tannehill, the winner, improved to 3-1. He held the Phillies to 1 run on 5 hits over 6.2 innings, while striking out 1 and walking 1. The loss puts Philadelphia at 14-11.
With Pittsburgh leading 1-0 in the top of the fifth, Vaughan hit a changeup from Pete Alexander for a 3-run home run. It was his 2nd home run of the season and put the Pirates ahead, 4-0.
"See ball, hit ball. When I think too much, that's when I get in trouble," Vaughan told the Pittsburgh Herald.
