Philadelphia Beats Cincinnati in 10-Inning Thriller
|
Cincinnati got a big-time effort from pitcher Max Manning, but it wasn't enough to keep the Philadelphia Phillies from winning the game, 3-1. Manning threw 7.1 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. Philadelphia reliever Erskine Mayer picked up the win, upping his record to 2-1. Rob Dibble took the loss. The loss drops Cincinnati to 10-16.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Carlos Ruiz? The 33-year old catcher Ruiz stroked a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the tenth inning to put Philadelphia up, 2-1. For the game, he was 2 for 3, including 1 double and 1 single.
"I'll play 10 innings, I'll play 20," said Phillies manager . "Whatever it takes to win the ballgame."
