New York parlayed a decent outing from starter Hilton Smith into a solid win over the Colorado Rockies. The final score was 4-2. Tug McGraw earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed 1 run on 3 hits in 1.1 innings. He upped his record to 1-1. Tom Seaver locked down his 6th save.

New York left fielder Cleon Jones helped the Mets go up, 3-2, in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the game tied, Jones hit a run-scoring single off Colorado pitcher Dick Redding.

After the game, New York manager applauded the team's effort. "They busted their tails out there," he said.

Colorado is 8-15 after the defeat.
