Mets Wrest Win from Cardinals, 5-4
|
The New York Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-4, in National League action at Citi Field. New York pitcher Hilton Smith had a standout performance. Tom Seaver, credited with the win in relief, is now 2-0. He allowed no runs on no hits in 1 innings. The win gives New York a record of 11-8.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when New York pinch hitter Bobby Bonilla, facing Bruce Sutter, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Mets the 5-4 win.
"We couldn't have scripted it any better," Bonilla said in his postgame press conference.
