The Los Angeles Dodgers got a sterling performance from pitcher Orel Hershiser, but the Miami Marlins still prevailed, 5-3. Hershiser threw 7.0 innings of 5-hit ball. Bryan Harvey got credit for the win, improving to 1-0. He allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings. The win moves Miami to a record of 4-5.

Nashville, Tennessee-born Turkey Stearnes came through in the clutch. In the bottom of the eighth, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and the Marlins trailing 3-2, he hit a 2-run single to left to put Miami on top.

Stearnes said his team "played with a purpose."
