The New York Mets, behind a great outing from Dwight Gooden, who is rated as the 7th best prospect by BNN, defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-1, at Citi Field. The winning pitcher was Gooden, now 1-0. He tossed 6.2 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 3 and fanning 6. The Mets, now 3-1, have been playing some good baseball.
The Phillies had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Mets going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 25-year old first baseman Keith Hernandez came to the plate. Hernandez hit a run-scoring triple on a 1-2 screwball from Philadelphia hurler Pete Alexander. It was Hernandez's 1st triple of the year.
Hernandez told a New York Citizen reporter that he was "more than satisfied" with the win.
