The San Diego Padres put the giddy home crowd in an even more jubilant mood after beating the New York Mets in the season opener at Petco Park. Center Fielder Dave Winfield won plaudits for San Diego. He went 2-3 with a home run, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. The winning pitcher was 26-year old left-handed pitcher Randy Jones.
