The Boston Red Sox faced a tough opponent in Seattle pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Safeco Field by a final score of 5-3. Iwakuma went 5.2 innings and allowed 3 runs. Cy Young was the winner. Over 5.2 innings, he yielded 3 runs on 6 hits, with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Earning his 28th save for Boston was Jonathan Papelbon.
Boston first baseman Luke Easter said the only thing on his mind when he came to bat with a runner on 1st in the top of the sixth was making good contact. He did that much, and more! Easter hit a 2-run home run to stake Boston to a 5-3 lead. His 25th home run of the season came off Seattle pitcher Mike Schooler.
"No disrespect to the other team," said Boston manager . "But it's nice to get an easy win."
The third-place Red Sox bumped their record to 67-68.
