The Minnesota Twins beat the Baltimore Orioles, 5-3. Minnesota pitcher and Atlanta, Georgia, native Roy Welmaker led the way. Welmaker, the winner, moves to 14-11. He threw 5.2 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 7 and giving up 4 walks. Joe Nathan closed it out for his 32nd save.

The Twins got a big hit from designated hitter Josh Gibson. Facing Baltimore pitcher Jim Palmer in the top of the fifth, Gibson pounded a solo home run to right. His 35th home run of the season put the Twins ahead, 3-1.

"Our offense was purring," said Minnesota manager . "Like a well-oiled machine."

The Twins improved their record to 74-60 by beating Baltimore.
