Athletics Take Down Yankees, 2-1
|
The Athletics earned a hard-fought, 2-1 win in 10 innings at Yankee Stadium. To do so required withstanding a fine effort from New York pitcher Lefty Gomez. Gomez went 8 innings and allowed 1 run. Oakland reliever Tim Hudson picked up the win. Mariano Rivera, who is tied for 2nd in the AL in saves with 33, took the loss for New York. Dennis Eckersley got the save, his 23rd in 27 chances.
Oakland used a timely hit from Dwayne Murphy to get the win. The center fielder stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the tenth inning to put the Athletics ahead, 2-1. It might've been his only hit, but it did the trick.
"Banging out wins is what it's all about," said Murphy.
The Athletics upped their record to 65-60.
