Bill Dickey was a vital contributor to the 8-2 New York victory over Baltimore. The Yankees catcher went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 4. Waite Hoyt, the winner, improved to 1-0. He held the Orioles to 2 runs on 5 hits over 6.2 innings, while striking out 3 and walking 2. The win puts the Yankees at 71-51, while the Orioles drop to 56-69.

With New York leading 3-0 in the top of the third, Dickey hit a curveball from Jim Palmer for a grand slam home run. It was his 9th home run of the season and put the Yankees ahead, 7-0.
