Babe Ruth was a vital contributor to the 3-1 New York victory over Houston. The Yankees designated hitter threw 5.0 innings allowing 1 run. The first-place Yankees, at 68-47, lead the American League Eastern Division by 9½ games.

The Astros had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Yankees going into the top of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 25-year old second baseman Tony Lazzeri came to the plate. Lazzeri hit a run-scoring double on a 0-1 curveball from Houston hurler J R Richard. It was Lazzeri's 20th double of the year.

"We didn't string enough hits together to win the game," said tight-lipped Houston manager . "Obviously."
