The Houston Astros defeated the Detroit Tigers, 8-5. Doing his part was left fielder Lance Berkman, who went 2 for 3 with a home run and was hit by a pitch. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. The winning pitcher was 37-year old right-handed pitcher Joe Niekro. He tossed 87 pitches over 5.1 innings, allowing 5 runs on 12 hits.
