Mariners Lose Late to White Sox
|
Chicago beat Seattle on the strength of starting pitcher Dick Whitworth's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 2-1. Chicago reliever Doc White picked up the win, upping his record to 2-4. Felix Hernandez absorbed the loss. Hoyt Wilhelm got credit for the save for Chicago. It was his 21st of the year.
George Scales drove in one run for Chicago. With one out and the game tied in the bottom of the eighth inning, Scales, the 11th overall pick in the 2014 draft, had a clutch at-bat. Facing Seattle hurler J J Putz, he hit a sacrifice fly to give the White Sox a 2-1 lead.
"We want to make a habit of winning," Whitworth said after the game.
Chicago, now 59-45, holds down first place in the American League Central Division.
