The Detroit Tigers downed the New York Yankees, 5-4, the largest share of the credit belonging to shortstop Alan Trammell. On the day, Trammell went 2-4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 3 for the Tigers. Detroit reliever John Hiller picked up the win to move to 6-1. Sparky Lyle suffered the loss. Willie Hernandez closed out the game, earning his 16th save.
Had Darrell Evans not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Evans hit a 2-run single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Tigers.
"Ah," said Evans in a jubilant clubhouse, "the sweet smell of victory!."
Detroit is now 46-56.
