DiMaggio Excels in 5-2 New York Win
Joe DiMaggio was a vital contributor to the 5-2 New York victory over Detroit. The Yankees left fielder was 3-4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 4. New York starter Ron Guidry was credited with the win after throwing 100 pitches over 5.1 innings. His record now stands at 12-5. Mariano Rivera recorded the save, making him 29 for 33.

DiMaggio had a game-changing home run in the top of the sixth. On a 1-2 slider from Hal Newhouser, he banged a 3-run home run to center, giving the Yankees a 5-2 lead. It was the 7th home run of the year for DiMaggio.

"I was just going up there trying to see good pitches, that was about it," said DiMaggio.

New York, now 60-41, holds down first place in the American League Eastern Division.
