Tigers Capture Close Win
|
Detroit ruined an otherwise fine effort from Stan Bahnsen by toppling New York, 2-1. The New York pitcher threw 8.0 innings of shutout ball. The last-place Tigers now have a record of 45-55.
The defining moment came in the bottom of the ninth for Detroit. That's when Charlie Gehringer hit a 2-run home run off 35-year old right-handed pitcher Mariano Rivera to win the game. The home crowd went wild.
"This place was jumping at the end," Gehringer said.
