The New York Yankees torpedoed the Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium. The final score was 8-2, New York. Babe Ruth went 1-for-3 for the winning team. The first-place Yankees, at 59-40, now lead their division by 9½ games.

Ruth contributed a big hit, a 3-run home run, for New York in the bottom of the fifth. With his team trailing 1-0, Ruth took a curveball from Felix Hernandez and stroked the home run to right. His 13th home run of the season allowed the Yankees to leap in front, 3-1.

"We'll pocket this win," said Ruth, "and then go after another."
