The New York Yankees, despite a fine performance by Seattle pitcher Erik Hanson, grabbed a 1-0 win at Yankee Stadium. Hanson allowed 1 run over 6.2 innings. Mariano Rivera recorded his 28th save for New York. The Yankees lead the American League Eastern Division by 8½ games.

The Mariners had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Yankees going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the 22-year old left fielder Joe DiMaggio came to the plate. DiMaggio hit a solo home run on a 0-2 curveball from Seattle hurler Erik Hanson. It was DiMaggio's 6th home run of the year.

"Runs were tough to come by," said DiMaggio. "But we scored just enough to win."
