The Mariners earned a hard-fought, 6-5 win in 10 innings at Safeco Field. To do so required withstanding a fine effort from Kansas City pitcher Steve Busby. Busby went 5.1 innings and allowed no runs. Seattle reliever J J Putz was the winner. His record is now 4-3. Jeff Montgomery took the loss. Seattle is in third place in the American League Western Division with a record of 50-48.

The Mariners got a clutch hit from third baseman Kyle Seager. In the bottom of the tenth, he delivered a run-scoring single to win the game for the Mariners.

Seager said afterward that he was "glad the fans were treated to a good ballgame."
