Seattle Defeated by Detroit, 2-0
|
In a tight tilt between the Detroit Tigers and the Seattle Mariners, Hal Newhouser was the deciding factor. The Detroit left-hander spearheaded the 2-0 win. Newhouser yielded no runs over 7 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 8. His record improves to 7-7. Detroit is now 39-52, while Seattle is 47-47.
The Tigers got a big hit from third baseman Darrell Evans. Facing Seattle pitcher Wilmer Fields in the bottom of the fifth, Evans pounded a 2-run home run to left. His 11th home run of the season put the Tigers ahead, 2-0.
"Put this one in the bank," said Evans afterward.
