Minnesota overcame a superior effort from Lefty Grove to beat Oakland, 4-1, in 11 innings. The Oakland pitcher threw 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball. The win went to Joe Nathan in relief. His record improves to 8-0. Dennis Eckersley took the loss. The 52-42 Twins lead the American League Central Division by one game.

Josh Gibson delivered a big hit for Minnesota. The designated hitter drilled a 3-run home run in the top of the 11th inning to put the Twins ahead, 4-1. It was his only hit, but it was a beauty.

"That was your kind of game, if you like high drama," said Twins manager .
