Arizona Earns 3-2 Win
|
Arizona overcame a superior effort from Chris Short to beat Philadelphia, 3-2. The Philadelphia pitcher threw 7.1 innings of 4-hit ball. Jose Valverde picked up the win in relief. His record improves to 2-0. Steve Carlton suffered the loss. Matt Mantei closed out the game, earning his 6th save.
The Diamondbacks beat the Phillies in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Justin Upton produced in the bottom of the eighth. Batting against Steve Carlton, Upton gave his team the lead, 3-2, when he hit a run-scoring single.
"Every loss hurts," said Philadelphia manager . "But this was a tough one."
The loss drops Philadelphia to 15-9.
