Andy Benes never let the Diamondbacks get in a groove. The right-hander used his bread and butter, his fastball, to pitch the Padres to a win, 3-1. In 7 innings, Benes surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 2. He allowed 1 run. Trevor Hoffman notched his 27th save of the season.
Adrian Gonzalez had a big run-scoring double for the Padres in the bottom of the fourth inning. With San Diego leading 2-1 and a runner on 1st, he got a changeup from Brandon Webb, who is tied for 8th in the NL in innings pitched with 203.0, and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 12th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Padres ahead, 3-1.
"This was a nice win for us," said Benes. "It's one more step toward our ultimate goal."
The loss makes Arizona 58-80.
