Arizona Loses, 1-0, to Cincinnati in 11
|
In a close contest featuring the Cincinnati Reds and the Arizona Diamondbacks, pitcher Johnny Vander Meer was in the zone. The Cincinnati left-hander helped his team prevail, 1-0, in 11 innings. Rob Dibble, now 2-4, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2.1 innings. Cincinnati is last in the National League Central Division with a record of 51-55.
The defining moment came in the bottom of the 11th for Cincinnati. That's when Joey Votto hit a run-scoring double off 23-year old right-handed pitcher Daniel Hudson to win the game. The home crowd went wild.
"To become 'battle-tested,'" said Votto, "you need to compete in this kind of contest."
