Arizona shortstop Tony Batista had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Batista was 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once, even as San Diego beat the Diamondbacks, 5-4. Bruce Hurst got credit for the win, improving to 6-1. He allowed 3 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings. Craig Lefferts locked down his 4th save.
With two out in the bottom of the eighth, Adrian Gonzalez had a game-changing hit. The Padres first baseman slammed a run-scoring single off Jose Valverde, making the score 5-3, San Diego.
"You never take a win for granted in this league," said Gonzalez.
San Diego is in second place in the National League Western Division with a record of 47-35.
