A surprise pennant race

Milwaukee took the American Association by three games over St. Louis. Baltimore finished sixteen games behind. Washington won the National League by six games over Pittsburgh, led by a remarkable pitching staff.

Ruth stands alone

Washington’s trio

Dick Redding won pitching MVP with 27 victories and a league-leading 1.55 ERA. Teammates Ed Walsh (2.05) and Bullet Rogan (2.06) finished second and third.

The ninth inning heard around the league

Washington led the deciding game 2–1 entering the ninth. Milwaukee sent seven men to the plate and scored three runs, including two on Ira Flagstead’s go-ahead single. Washington answered with one in the bottom half but fell 4–3. Johnny Sain earned his second series win, and Flagstead was named MVP.
