First Month of Season<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

The season starts off with two double headers, the Chicago Giants host the Indianapolis ABCs and the Brooklyn Royal Giants host the New York Lincoln Giants. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

May 2, 1920<\/i><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Schorling Park, Chicago<\/i><\/span><\/span>. The ABC's rocked the Giants Walter Ball for 7 runs in 5 and 2\/3 innings on 9 hits. They continue to knock around Giants Luther Farrell for another 3 runs on 3 hits in a 10-4 beat down. Dicta Johnson threw a complete game for the win: 4 earned runs, 8 hits 3 bb, 5 K. For the ABCs; Henry Blackmon was 2 for 3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI, and 2 runs. Morton Clark was 3 for 5, with a triple. Connie Day was 1 for 3, triple, 3 runs, 2 walks.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the second game Dizzy Dismukes pitched an outstanding complete game for the win; 4 hits, 3 bb, 4 K. John Taylor threw a complete game but took the loss: 2 earned runs, 11 hits, 2 bb, 7 K. For the ABCs Morton Clark: 1 for 4, 2 errors, 2 great plays. Ben Taylor: 2 for 4, double, 2 runs. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

May 2 1920<\/i><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Dexter Park, Brooklyn<\/i><\/span><\/span>. The hometown Royal Giants pounded the visiting Lincoln Giants shutting them out on 5 hits and scoring 13 runs of their own. Brooklyn's Roy Roberts threw a shutout: 5 hits, 3 bb, 10K. Al Reavis pitched 7.1 innings and took the loss: 7 earned runs, 14 hits, 6 bb, 2 K. Brooklyn's John Henry Lloyd: 3 for 5, 2 RBI, 2 runs. Harry Kenyon: 2 for 4, 2 RBI, 2 runs. In the second game Brooklyn's Jesse Hubbard threw a shutout: 4 hits, 0 bb, 4 K. Joe Williams went the distance and took the loss: 2 earned runs, 11 hits, 1 BB, 4 K. Wayne Carr went the distance and took the loss: 4 earned runs, 9 hits, 2bb, 9 K. The Monarch's George Carr: 3 for 4. Giants Charlie Blackwell: 1 for 2, 2 runs. May 9 1920<\/i><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Redland Field, Cincinnati, OH<\/i><\/span><\/span>. The home Cuban Stars West defeat the visiting ABCs 7-2. Jose Leblanc pitched a solid complete game for the Stars win: 1 earned run, 6 hits, 1 bb, 6 K. Dicta Johnson went the distance and took the loss for the ABCs: 1 earned run, 7 hits, 1 bb, 3 K. He drops to 1-1 on the season. Stars Bienvenido Jimenez: 2 for 4, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs, 2 errors. In the second contest The ABCs defeat the Cuban West Stars 7-4. Dizzy Dismukes went the distance for the win: 1 earned run, 7 hits, 2 bb, 0 K. He's 2-0 on the year. Cheo Hernandez went the distance and took the loss: 3 earned runs, 11 hits, 3 bb, 6 K. Morten Clark: 3 for 5 for the ABCs. Marcelino Guerra: 3 for 4, triple, 2 RBI for the Stars West. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

May 9 1920, S<\/span><\/span>chorling Park, Chicago, IL<\/i><\/span><\/span>. The Chicago clubs face off as the American Giants defeat the Giants 7-3. Tom Williams threw a complete game for the win: 2 earned runs, 8 hits, 1 bb, 3 K. John Taylor threw a complete game but took the loss: 4 earned runs, 10 hits, 2 bb, 3 K. He drops to 0-2 on the season. Christobal Torriente: 3 for 4 in the win. Willie Green: 3 for 5, 2 runs, 2 errors in the loss.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

May 10 1920, Redland Field, Cincinnati, OH. <\/span><\/span><\/i>Cuban Stars inprove to 2-1 defeating the ABCs 4-3. Faustino Vales pitched a solid complete game for the win: 2 earned runs, 6 hits, 3 bb, 3 K. Jim Jeffries was the loser: 1 IP in relief, 2 hits, 1 bb. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

May 15, 1920, Redland Field, Cincinnati, OH. <\/span><\/span><\/i>Stars West 2, Detroit Stars 1. Jose Leblanc pitched 2 innings and picked up the win: 2 IP, 1 hit, 0 bb, 1 K. He moves to 2-0 on the season. Detroit's Brown took the loss: 2 IP, 1 hit. With the scored tied at 1 in the bottom of the 12<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/sup><\/span> inning Valentin Dreke singled scoring Rios to the win the game. He's 3-0 on the year. Rube Curry pitched 8 solid innings but took the loss: 2 earned runs, 9 hits, 2 bb, 4 K. He drops to 1-1 on the season. In the bottom of the sixth Bernardo Baro belted a McDonald fast ball into the bleachers for the league's first home run. Prudencio Martinez threw a shutout: 6 hits, 2 bb, 7 K. Gifford McDonald pitched 6 innings and took the loss: 1 earned run, 5 hits, 1 bb, 5 K.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

May 24, 1920, Westwood Field, Dayton, OH. <\/span><\/span><\/i>Visiting Indianapolis rallies with 5 runs in top of the 9<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/sup><\/span> inning for a 5-4 win. Connie Day capped off a 5 run rally for the win. Dizzy Dismukes pitched 2 inning s and picked up the win: 2 IP, 3 earned runs, 4 hits, 1bb, 0 K. He's 4-1 on the year. Dicta Johnson pitched a scoreless 9<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/sup><\/span> to record his fist save on the year. Slim Branham threw a complet game but took the loss: 9 hits, 3 bb, 3 K. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

May 27, 1920, Association Park, Kansas City, MO. <\/span><\/span><\/i>The home town Monarchs take 3 of 4 against the Chicago American Giants. 4-2, 6-4, 7-15, 4-3. Kansas City now 8-3 on the season. Chicago AG 3-5. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

May 28, 1920, Washington Park, Indianapolis, IN<\/span><\/span><\/i>. The St. Louis Giants blast the Indianapolis ABC 18-4. In a rare start Oscar Charleston was pounded for 4 earned runs on 8 hits, 1 bb and 1 K. Multiple Giants had great days; Brooks, Dudley, Holtz and Kennard knocked in 8 of the runs. One bright spot for the ABCs Oscar Charleston did hit an inside the park homer in the 4<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/sup><\/span> inning, the third homer hit on the season. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the first month the Dayton Marcos and the Kansas City Monarchs are on top the national league while the Detroit Stars and the St. Louis Giants remain \u00bd game out of first. In the independent eastern league the Brooklyn Royal Giants are the only team with more than one win. Four of the clubs have yet to play a game. Cristobal Torriente of the Chicago American Giants is on top of the batting board at .486. Dayton Marcos Isaac Lane is second at .480. The Detroit Stars Edgar Wesley is top RBI man at 12. Dave Brown of the American Giants has a 0.50 era with two victories.
