New York Blanks Pittsburgh Behind Marquard Thursday, August 17th , 1916 New York Giants pitcher Rube Marquard blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-0, at Polo Grounds, tossing a 8-hitter while issuing 2 walks and collecting 5 strikeouts. After his sharp shutout performance, he shared credit with the rest of the club. "I was just locked in out there and some of that is due to having a catcher who has such a great feel for hitters," Marquard said. "I couldn't do what I did without all the guys out there today."
