Safeco Field was the site of a remarkable pitchers' duel.

The Seattle Mariners overcame a good performance by New York pitcher Babe Ruth to knock off New York, 2-1, at Safeco Field. Ruth threw 8.0 innings of 5-hit ball. Kazuhiro Sasaki earned the save, his 18th, for the Mariners.

Harold Reynolds had a big solo home run for the Mariners in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Seattle leading 1-0 and the bases empty, he sized up a splitter from Babe Ruth, who is on pace for 101 RBI this season, and punished it. The result was his 2nd home run of the season, which put the Mariners on top, 2-0.

"We needed two runs to win," said Mariners manager , "and that's what we got."

The American League Western Division-leading Mariners are 40-26.
