In a low-scoring game between Kansas City and New York, pitcher Mark Gubicza was excellent. The Kansas City right-hander helped his team knock off the Yankees, 2-1. Jeff Montgomery closed it out for Kansas City, earning his 18th save. Kansas City occupies second place in the American League Central Division at 31-33.

The Royals benefited from an error in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kansas City was leading 1-0 when Carlos Beltran hit a run-scoring single that was misplayed. It put Kansas City in front, 2-0.
