Oakland turned a good performance from starting pitcher Lefty Grove into a 5-1 triumph over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The save went to Dennis Eckersley, his 15th this season. At 35-24, the Athletics find themselves in second place in the American League Western Division.

Oakland used a well-timed hit by Mickey Cochrane to capture the win. The catcher socked a 2-run double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Athletics ahead, 4-0. Though it was his only hit in 3 at-bats, it was important.

"You want to go out there and put up zeroes, that's the main thing," said Grove. "You don't want to get caught in one of those back-and-forth, run-for-run games."
