The New York Yankees had to overcome a big game from Minnesota shortstop Roy Smalley III to leave Yankee Stadium with a victory. And they did, winning, 7-6, in 10 innings. Smalley III went 3-4 with 3 singles and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. New York reliever Mariano Rivera picked up the win, while Joe Nathan took the loss for Minnesota. The second-place Yankees hiked their record to 31-25.

With the bases empty in the bottom of the ninth, Graig Nettles delivered the knockout blow when he hit a solo home run to win it for New York. In the contest, Nettles went 2 for 4 with a home run.
