Miami got a strong outing from Jose Fernandez as the Marlins defeated the San Diego Padres, 4-2, at Marlins Ballpark. The winner was Fernandez. He threw 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball. The loser was Randy Jones. At 4-2, the Marlins have played well so far.
The Marlins got a big at-bat from right fielder Giancarlo Stanton. For the game, Stanton went 1 for 2 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fourth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave Miami a 3-2 lead.
Stanton said his team "played with a purpose."
