San Francisco Giants starter Hooks Wiltse turned in a sterling performance against the Chicago Cubs, leading his team to a slim, 3-2 win. Rod Beck saved it for San Francisco.

The Cubs had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Giants going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 36-year old left fielder Barry Bonds came to the plate. Bonds hit a run-scoring double on a 1-2 sinker from Chicago hurler Rick Reuschel. It was Bonds's 16th double of the year.

"Nice, tidy little win," Bonds said after the game.

The win puts the Giants at 30-24, while the Cubs drop to 28-25.
