Colorado Offense Jammed Up by Braves
|
The Atlanta Braves topped the Colorado Rockies, 4-1, in National League action at Turner Field. The game was highlighted by the performance of Atlanta pitcher Phil Niekro. Niekro got the win, improving to 5-3. He gave up 5 hits and walked 2 over 8 innings. He allowed 1 run. The save went to Craig Kimbrel, number 11 for him.
The Rockies had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Braves going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 30-year old first baseman Freddie Freeman came to the plate. Freeman hit a solo home run on a first pitch changeup from Colorado hurler Ubaldo Jimenez. It was Freeman's 3rd home run of the year.
Freeman said, "Whether you hit the ball hard, you walk, you have a long at-bat, 10 or 12 pitches, or you hit a homer, you're just trying to do anything you can do to help the team win."
The setback makes Colorado 14-37.
