The Chicago Cubs licked the San Diego Padres, 5-4. Billy Williams deserved a big chunk of the credit. The left fielder was 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2 for the Cubs. Clark Griffith, the winner, improved to 6-1. He held the Padres to 4 runs on 4 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 2 and walking 2. The Cubs now own a record of 26-24.
It could have been a different outcome for Chicago, had it not been for Anthony Rizzo, the top prospect . Rizzo contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the fourth inning to put Chicago up, 5-2.
Chicago manager commended his team for delivering "maximum effort."
