The New York Yankees received a sterling performance from starting pitcher Lefty Gomez, allowing them to shoot down the Chicago White Sox, 2-1. Mariano Rivera nailed down the save. New York is in second place in the American League Eastern Division with a record of 27-21.
It could have been a different outcome for New York, had it not been for Graig Nettles, the 32-year old third baseman . Nettles contributed a run-scoring ground out in the top of the second inning to put New York up, 2-0.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" New York manager said.
