Starting pitcher Don Gullett fulfilled his part of the bargain, helping the Cincinnati Reds stymie the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2. The winner was Gullett. He threw 7.2 innings allowing 2 runs. The loser was Mort Cooper. Rob Dibble finished to wrap up his 7th save.
In the bottom of the fifth, Pete Rose Sr delivered a clutch hit. With two gone and a runner on 2nd, the Cincinnati right fielder hit a run-scoring single, putting the Reds in front, 3-2.
"We did enough to win," said Gullett.
Cincinnati, at 24-23, holds down 4th place in the National League Central Division.
