Starting pitcher Pete Alexander gave the Philadelphia Phillies a rock-solid performance, helping his team defeat the Miami Marlins, 3-1, at Marlins Ballpark. Alexander got the win, improving to 8-1. He gave up 5 hits and walked 3 over 8 innings. He allowed 1 run. The save went to Erskine Mayer, his 14th this season.

It could have been a different outcome for Philadelphia, had it not been for Richie Ashburn, the 28-year old right fielder . Ashburn contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth inning to put Philadelphia up, 2-0.

"Sometimes a win comes easy," Ashburn told the Philadelphia Chronicle. "And sometimes you have to scratch and claw."

With the win, the Phillies hiked their record to 24-20.
