Cubs Win Pitchers' Duel, 1-0, Versus Cardinals
|
The Chicago Cubs had to overcome a fine effort from St. Louis pitcher Mort Cooper to win, 1-0, at Busch Stadium. Cooper went 8 innings and allowed 1 run. Rick Reuschel earned the win, while 29-year old right-handed pitcher Mort Cooper took the loss for St. Louis. After today's action, Chicago sits at 21-17; St. Louis slips to 22-17.
Hack Wilson, who is tied for 5th in the NL with a .935 OPS, had a direct impact on the outcome. Wilson contributed a solo home run in the top of the first inning to put Chicago up, 1-0.
Wilson attributed the win to his team's "dogged determination."
