Lefty Gomez was outstanding against New York. The left-hander had a fastball that was virtually unhittable at times. The result was a Yankees 5-4 win. The winner was Gomez. He threw 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball. The loser was Tom Seaver. At 22-16, the Yankees claim second place in the American League Eastern Division.
The Mets had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Yankees going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 22-year old left fielder Joe DiMaggio came to the plate. DiMaggio hit a 3-run home run on a 0-2 curveball from New York hurler Tom Seaver. It was DiMaggio's 5th home run of the year.
"I still think this team can play even better," DiMaggio told the New York Times.
