In a tight tilt between Cincinnati and Colorado, pitcher Johnny Vander Meer was a key contributor. The left-hander earned accolades for his standout performance in the 3-2 Reds win. The Rockies had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Reds going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 26-year old first baseman Joey Votto came to the plate. Votto hit a run-scoring double on a 1-0 curveball from Colorado hurler Aaron Cook. It was Votto's 6th double of the year.
"When I throw strikes I'm good, if I don't I'm not very good," said Vander Meer. "So I just have to throw strikes."
