Behind the bravura of shortstop Cal Ripken, the Baltimore Orioles topped the Tampa Bay Rays by the score of 9-2. Ripken was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 and driving in 3 for the Orioles. Urban Shocker, the winner, improved to 3-2. He held the Rays to 2 runs on 6 hits over 8.2 innings, while striking out 6 and walking 1. The Rays, now 16-20, have lost 6 in a row.
Brian Roberts had a big bases-clearing double for the Orioles in the top of the fifth inning. With Baltimore trailing 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a slider from David Price and swatted a double to center. It was his 11th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Orioles ahead, 3-1.
