Both teams had their chances, but the St. Louis Cardinals eventually prevailed.

With Johnny Mize leading the charge, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Chicago Cubs, 7-6. Mize was 2-3 with 2 home runs and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice for the Cardinals. St. Louis reliever Adam Wainwright was credited with the win. His record goes to 1-0. Kerry Wood took the loss for Chicago. Al Hrabosky collected save number 8.

Mize had a game-changing home run in the top of the eighth. On a 1-1 fastball from Bob Howry, he banged a 2-run home run to right-center, giving the Cardinals a 6-5 lead. It was the 3rd home run of the year for Mize.

"It feels good to get this one," Mize told the St. Louis News.
